Ghanaians woke up to a very sad event; one of the popular markets in the nation’s capital, Accra has been gutted to flames. On Wednesday 18th November, 2020, the Odawna Market was burnt to the ground.
According to an eyewitness, the fire had been raging on for hours, and has left residents of the area and shop owners at the market, also known as the ‘Pedestrian Shopping Mall’ in shock.
Although the cause of the fire remains unknown, videos show the fire spreading to other parts of the market.
Ghanaians took to Twitter reacting to the fire outbreak which isn’t the first time the Market has faced this tragedy.
One user Meister Kwame said, “Imagine waking up and finding out that your main source of income just got burnt . May God/Allah/Universe be with all those who had their shops in the market.”
Kaa Flex also wrote, “The fact that there’s a Fire Service station just 200 metres away from the Odawna market and it still got burnt says a lot about our system not working 24/7.“
