The statue of a former Member of Parliament (MP) for Ablekuma South, the late Madam Theresa Ameley Tagoe, situated in the middle of the Dansoman Roundabout in Accra, has been unveiled by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

Madam Tagoe passed on a decade ago.

Addressing residents of Dansoman who gathered to witness the event yesterday, President Akufo-Addo said the monument stood as a testimony to the work and sacrifices Madam Tagoe made to her country, her party, the New Patriotic Party (NPP), and her constituents.

Mixture

He described the mood of the occasion as a mixture of sadness and joy — sadness because of the demise of a colleague who was a valiant member in the struggle for democratic governance in the country.

He said Madam Tagoe was a top-notch politician who founded the Women’s Wing of the NPP and was an energetic member of the party until her death.
He said the late MP, who served the country in the erstwhile President Kufuor administration, did so with zeal and forthrightness.

President Akufo-Addo said Madam Tagoe would be remembered for her determination to shatter the glass ceiling and break barriers to make women have a strong voice in public life that made positive contributions to the development of the country.

Happy

He said he was excited at the same time because “the ceremony is a reminder that if you live a life of selflessness, engagement and dedicated to your community, your community will not forget you”.
President Akufo-Addo said he and the late MP became friends during their days at the University of Ghana decades ago, and that he was happy to see a monument erected in her memory for her sacrifices.

Invitation

The Minister of Communications and MP for the constituency, Mrs Ursula Owusu Ekuful, described the late MP as a role model for many women.

She recounted how Madam Tagoe, on her sick bed, had invited her (Ursula) to get herself involved actively in politics and take over from her as the MP.

Presentation:

A son of the late MP, Mr Kofi Tagoe, said her mother had been a mother for all.

He said Madam Tagoe shared what she had with all but never compromised on discipline.

He said she moulded her children to become responsible and invested in girls’ education and supported orphans.

Mr Tagoe said as MP, she excelled even among men and was an inspiration for girls, adding that her children were proud of her legacies. -#GhanaVotes2020
